Uvalde - The Best Kept Secret in the West Uvalde, Texas was first settled 1853, and in 1855-56 it was known as Encina. It was once the domain of notorious frontier sheriff and outlaw, J. King Fisher. An historical marker on Fisher and the graves of early settlers killed by Indians are in Pioneer Cemetery. It is in the 500 block of N. Park St. in Uvalde, Texas.

Today, Uvalde, Texas is a retail center for extensive cattle, sheep and goat ranching, and truck farming. Industries include vegetable packing and processing, aircraft modifications, and garment making.

Uvalde is at the intersection of nation's two longest highways, U.S. 90 and U.S. 83. Uvalde, Texas is the home of Southwest Texas Junior College and Sul Ross State Univ., Rio Grande College.

The Aviation Museum of Texas showcases a variety of aircraft including a PT-17 antique Stearma, a Liaison-4, a 1946 Ercoupe, a Fairchild, and a PT-19. Other exhibits include collection of Garner Field and WW II memorabilia. The site is at a former WWII training facility; Hangar No. 1 at Garner Field Airport, in Uvalde, Texas.

Garner Memorial Museum is the former home of John "Cactus Jack" Garner, vice president under Franklin D. Roosevelt. Miscellaneous historical material and special displays associated with Garner and area history are featured. There is am admission. It is located at 333 N. Park Street in Uvalde, Texas.

Restored and refurbished, the Grand Opera House, c. 1891, was once the center of Uvalde's cultural activity in Southwest Texas. Today's performances are given in an original turn-of-the-century setting. Tours are available through the box office. It is located at 100 W. North St, in Uvalde, Texas.
