Golfing

Scott Schreiner Municipal Golf Course, which underwent $1.8 million in renovations in 1999, re-opened in January 2000.

Nationally recognized golf course architect and Kerrville resident Joe Finger designed the changes and set out to create a diverse course for players of all skill levels. Larger tee boxes help spread wear.

Renovations were needed to make way for a state-of-the-art irrigation system and to accommodate changes to nearby Golf Street.

Other improvements include a new maintenance building and cart paths.

Fairways once lined with single-head sprinklers now receive adequate coverage of the new irrigation system, which uses treated effluent, rather than groundwater of wells.

The new sprinkler system and an abundant supply of treated effluent keeps the course green year round.

Officials say areas that contained rough only after wet weather are a challenge no matter the weather.

Larger greens with topography to make them more challenging were created. Gone are the round, flat greens that characterized the course.

Before renovations, the course had seven sand traps; now 15 more have been added to increase the challenge to players.

The championship tee box on the new hole 14 has been lengthened to include a portion of the golf course property not previously used.

It offers a spectacular view of the golf course and Kerrville. Finger referred to the new No. 17 as a showpiece hole, it includes a two-acre lake, lined with limestone complete with waterfall.
